Portimonense: Boa Morte at the double!

Portuguese FA Cup 4th round: Penafiel 0-3 Portimonense

Following the international break, Portimonense returned to competitive action with an emphatic Cup victory over top five second division side Penafiel.

Featuring the return from injury of Willyan and Fabrício as well as a first senior appearance for regular U-23 keeper Kosuke, manager Paulo Sérgio’s team took the lead just before the half-hour mark when back-to-form Shoya Nakajima set up Aylton Boa Morte for a cracking right foot finish.

Only three minutes later, it was Willyan’s turn to prepare the way for Boa Morte, the 28-year-old winger beating Caio Secco in the Penafiel goal with a delicately executed chip for his, and the visitors’, second.

Angulo killed off the tie before half-time was reached, making it three without reply with a powerful shot from outside the area, Nakajima once more the provider.

Portimonense could easily have increased the winning margin following the restart, Carlinhos hitting the post whilst Fabrício headed wide and Willyan saw his late effort well held by Secco.

Both the other remaining Algarve clubs to reach this stage of the competition were eliminated however, Olhanense giving up an early lead during their 2-1 defeat at Rio Ave while Farense were beaten 3-1 by fellow second division side Casa Pia.

The draw for the round of the last 16 will take place this Thursday afternoon with Sérgio probably hoping to finally receive a home tie as well as avoid the still present ‘big four’, Benfica, Sporting, Braga and Porto.

The last-mentioned powerhouse from the north will be the visitors at the Municipal Stadium on Friday, December 3 for the next league home fixture, but before then Portimonense travel to 13th-placed Famalicão this Saturday afternoon.
