Portimonense: Blown away!

LIGA BWIN: PORTIMONENSE 2-1 MARÍTIMO

Last Saturday’s afternoon clash between Portimonense and Marítimo had to be rescheduled for later that day as high winds and adverse weather conditions on Madeira forced the visitors to delay their planned departure for Lisbon and subsequent coach trip south by eight hours.

When the match finally kicked off at 6pm, it was the Algarveans, however, who appeared the more lethargic, finding very little in response to Xadas’ early Marítimo opener.

1-0 down at the interval without having seriously threatened the opposition goalmouth, manager Paulo Sérgio introduced Maurício, Pedro Sá and Rui Gomes for the second half.

But it was only after Yony and Bryan Róchez also joined the action, just after the hour mark, that Portimonense began to look more dangerous. The last-mentioned Honduran international had the ball in the back of the net on two occasions within 10 minutes of coming on, only to be called offside on both occasions, before Maurício latched onto a loose ball in the 80th to finally level the scores.

Not content with the draw on this occasion, the home side then produced a late onslaught which was rewarded in the second minute of injury time when Welinton Júnior buried Róchez’s lay-off in the area for the winner.

Portimonense, now joint eighth with Boavista, Vizela and Chaves on 26 points, and 11 clear of the relegation zone, next travel to 13th-placed Famalicão tomorrow (Friday) for a televised 8.15pm kick-off.
