Sardines will be taking centre stage at Portimão’s popular ‘Festival da Sardinha’, which begins on Wednesday, August 12 and will run until Sunday, August 16.
Arguably one of the most popular gastronomic events of the Algarvean summer, the festival will feature tons of charcoal-grilled fish and a variety of concerts, handicrafts and regional produce.
Back again this year is a “wallet-friendly” menu including bread, four sardines, boiled potatoes and Algarve salad for €7 at the six participating restaurants.
Also on the menu is a ‘sardinha no pão’ snack – a grilled sardine on a slice of fresh bread, on sale near the old ‘Lota’ fishing market along with other snacks, regional delicacies, drinks and handicrafts.
Portuguese “heartthrob” Tony Carreira will be the highlight of the festival’s musical programme, with a concert on the opening day.
Other performing acts include pop/rock group Vol.2 (August 13), singer-songwriter Tiago Bettencourt (August 14), Algarve singer and winner of the ‘Portuguese Idols’ competition Diogo Piçarra (August 15) and Fado singer António Zambujo (August 16).
Other local musicians and bands will perform throughout the five-day event at the nearby bandstand.
Participating restaurants include À Ravessa, Meco, Peixarada, Forte e Feio, Zizá and Retiro do Peixe Assado.
