Portimão’s new museum opens

PORTIMÃO’S NEW municipal museum is to be inaugurated tomorrow (Saturday) at 4pm by the Minister of Culture, Pinto Ribeiro, at its new location on the edge of the Arade River.

On show will be a large selection of donated artefacts from the region, such as industrial equipment, photographs, documents and archaeological and naval pieces, among others.

A local fishing boat, built in Galiza, northwest Spain, in 1911 and restored by Portimão Câmara will be exhibited outside the new museum.

As well as having permanent exhibitions and archived documents, the new museum will also have several temporary exhibitions throughout the year. The museum’s first official temporary event, a photography exhibition entitled PhotoEspaña 2008, will start on June 21.

Until July 14, the museum will be open Tuesdays, between 2.30pm and 6pm, and Wednesdays to Sundays, between 10am and 6pm.

During the summer, between July 15 and September 14, the museum will be open on Tuesdays from 7.30pm and 11pm and Wednesdays to Sundays, between 3pm and 11pm.

The museum’s new document centre and history archives are open to the public weekdays from 9am until 12.30pm and 2pm until 5.30pm.
