Portimão to welcome world’s ‘futsal elite’

Four of the world’s best futsal (indoor football) teams will be facing each other in Portimão at the end of August as part of the third ‘Record Masters Cup Futsal’.

The prestigious pre-season tournament features an impressive line-up of Sporting CP, SL Benfica, Movistar Inter FS (Spain) and Magnus Futsal (Brazil) and will take place at the Portimão Arena on the last weekend of the month (August 25-26), bringing some of the sport’s biggest stars like Ricardinho and Falcão to the Algarve.

“It is with great excitement that Portimão welcomes this tournament for the second time, providing once again the attractiveness of Portimão Arena for these kinds of sporting events,” Portimão mayor Isilda Gomes said at the event’s official presentation at the Tivoli Marina Hotel last week.

She also guaranteed that the Masters Cup will return to the town in 2019 – the year that Portimão will boast the European City of Sport title.

Gonçalo Alves, a former star of Benfica’s futsal team who took part in the presentation event, spoke highly of the tournament, describing it as “the biggest in the world” and “which every player wants to play”.

The tournament begins with a clash between Sporting and Magnus at 2.30pm on Saturday, August 25 before Benfica takes on Movistar Inter later that day at 7pm.

The remaining matches are scheduled for 1.30pm (Benfica vs Magnus) and 7pm (Sporting vs Inter) respectively.

All four matches will be aired live by CMTV.

Tickets for each match cost €5 and can be purchased at the Portimão Arena, TEMPO theatre and Portimão museum or online at www.bol.pt

They are also being sold at Worten, Fnac, El Cort Inglés, CTT and Serveasy.
