Around €350,000 that was due to be invested in a powerboat sports event in Portimão will instead be used to purchase new ventilators to help patients affected by the coronavirus outbreak.
Portimão Council confirmed the news over the weekend following a decision by Portugal’s powerboat federation (FPM) to indefinitely postpone this year’s Grand Prix of Portugal, a hugely popular powerboat event held every year in the town.
This year, it was due to take place between May 8 and 10.
“This measure of public health aims to strengthen the strategy adopted by municipal authorities in Portimão which aims to effectively fight this pandemic by cancelling all kinds of social, cultural and sports events while also contributing to the bolstering of equipment used to treat patients at our local hospital,” Portimão Mayor Isilda Gomes said.
