PORTIMÃO CÂMARA is planning to build a new sports and leisure park in the Figueira parish that will includefacilities for caravans.
Although the public tender has not been announced or scheduled, the construction work should start in 2009. The project is expected to occupy four hectares, be located near the EN125, and has an estimated cost of 700,000 euros.
The proposed site is already equipped with a pavilion for outdoor sports, which will be renovated and have a roof.
The parking area for the caravans is highlighted as one of the project’s most interesting aspects, as it will be the first in the Algarve. A spokesman from Portimão Câmara said this new service will provide better facilities for those who visit the region using caravans.
Portugal has a total of 8,000 caravans registered, according to the Camping Car Portugal portal, and few places where they can park with the necessary facilities.
Environmental preservation has not been forgotten at the new park thanks to the importance of protected areas such as the Farelo stream and Alvor estuary, which are near the park.
