A maths teacher who worked at the Manuel Teixeira Gomes high school in Portimão has become the second person in the Algarve to die infected with the Covid-19 virus.
The man, named as Manuel Magalhães and said to be in his 60s, died last night in Faro Hospital’s intensive care unit.
It is reported that he lived in the Lagoa borough and had underlying heart problems.
The man is believed to have caught the virus from a fellow teacher at the school who had spent her Carnival vacation in the north of Italy with her family. The woman’s husband and daughter are also infected.
Reports Observador newspaper, the woman continued teaching upon returning instead of self-isolating given that she and her family had returned from a risky area.
Only her husband, who is also a teacher, stayed home and followed his colleagues’ recommendations, the paper adds.
The first coronavirus patient to die in the Algarve was a 77-year-old man who lived in Albufeira.
