Matthias Sandeck, a 31-year-old Portuguese-German spearfisher, has died in a “serious accident” while representing Portugal’s national spearfishing team at the Euro-African Spearfishing Championship in Denmark on Sunday (September 8).
Official details have yet to be revealed. Danish TV channelTV2reports that the athlete “disappeared near a bridge” while competing.
Sandeck was representing the national team alongside Jody Lot and Humberto Silva, who were also his teammates at the Clube Naval de Portimão.
The nautical club has released a short statement lamenting the athlete’s death and sending its condolences to his family, friends and teammates.
The Portuguese Federation of Subaquatic Activities has also said it was “with shock and deep sadness and consternation” that it learned of Sandeck’s death.
It added that the cause of the accident is still unknown but that the organisers of the event alongside the federation are working together to determine what happened.
