Portimão reactivates temporary homeless shelter

Located in the heart of the city, the shelter is open daily from 20h00 to 08h00 until April.

Portimão’s temporary homeless shelter reopened its doors on December 7. The social measure, adopted from the beginning of the Christmas season and during winter time, is an initiative of the NPISA, Portimão’s Homeless Planning and Intervention Centre.

As part of the NPISA’s ongoing work, a cooperation agreement was signed with partnering entities, through which the Portimão municipality has guaranteed €32,640 in financial support to the MAPS (the AIDS Support Movement), which is responsible for managing the shelter. The donated amount is intended to cover the expenses of the reactivated shelter, which can accommodate up to 18 people.

Located in the heart of the city and open daily from 20h00 to 08h00 until April, the facilities have recently benefited from improvements to provide greater comfort for its users.

Thanks to the municipality’s financial support, the MAPS can ensure the necessary human resources for the shelter, including cleaning services, food support, laundry care, electricity and water expenses, and provide users with a reception service, light meals, sleeping quarters and changing rooms.

The remaining partnering entities provide material resources whenever justified within the scope of the shelter’s operation.

Portimão’s NPISA brings together several local and public entities, such as the Parish Councils of Portimão, Alvor and Mexilhoeira Grande, the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve – Hospital de Portimão (CHUA), the Family Planning Association (APF), the Portuguese Red Cross – Portimão Delegation, GRATO – Support Group for Drug Addicts and the Santas Casas da Misericórdia of Alvor and Portimão.
