Portimão Pirates

Dear Editor,

I follow the Algarve Resident weekly and enjoyed reading your update on the Portimão Pirates American football team last week.

I have lived in the Algarve for 11 years now and most definitely classify the area as home – I really love it here. Although, as an American myself, I must admit that seeing initiatives like this is something that I miss from the States. My children are both grown up now; however, as kids both played American football. Games against other local teams were held most Saturday mornings, and it really brought the whole community out; the players, cheerleaders, parents, grandparents and friends.

I believe that if more teams like this were to develop in the Algarve, it really could grow into something great for the area. If I was younger and fitter myself, I would be rearing to go and get involved on the field again, because the whole experience of the game is not only fun and exciting, but it also creates a real event that unites the whole community, something that I feel lacks here sometimes.

I personally would recommend to anyone reading this to give the game a go, and help the Portimão Pirates in their mission of establishing a league here!
