Maternity ward has been closing over the weekend every two weeks
Portimão Hospital’s maternity unit closed once again at 9am this morning (March 23), only due to reopen at 9am on Monday (March 27).
In other words, pregnant women who go into labour in the Western Algarve will once again have to be transferred to the maternity unit at Faro Hospital.
The maternity unit in Portimão has been closing every two weeks over the weekend since the start of February due to a lack of health professionals, reports SIC.
However, the hospital’s obstetrics A&E department remains open to women pregnant for up to 22 weeks, as well as the gynaecology unit.
While the hospital’s paediatric A&E department will be open over the weekend, it will be manned between 9pm this Thursday and 9am on Monday by doctors who are not specialised in paediatrics.
Paediatricians will only be available at the paediatric A&E in Faro, SIC adds.
