Orange harvest this year have been very disappointing. Citrus trees need good supplies of water throughout the year to thrive.

Portimão market celebrates juicy Algarve oranges

Portimão will celebrate the Algarve’s famously juicy oranges with its 14th ‘Orange Week’ at the municipal market between February 8 and 12.

The event allows people to buy the oranges at a special price and take part in a variety of online events, such as photographic ‘showcookings’ created by the Portimão Hotel and Tourism School.

Tips on how to use oranges to cook will also be provided via the ‘Prato Certo’ (Right Dish) project, which promotes a “healthy and budget-friendly” diet.

These and other events will be posted on the market’s Facebook page (Mercados de Portimão).

The event was forced to undergo changes in 2021 due to the pandemic which forced the initiative to ‘go digital’ like so many other events. However, organisers expect the event to return to normal in 2023.
