Portimão ‘loves its local market’

Fresh fish, vegetables from Monchique and traditional Algarve bread will be some of the products that will be sold at reduced prices this month at the Portimão market, which has once again joined an international initiative called ‘Love Your Local Market’.

The campaign encourages markets around the world to prepare “special activities” for a month in a bid to attract more people and promote a vibrant atmosphere.

As organisers point out, it aims to “build affection and support for markets, by enhancing their status within the local community and highlighting the importance of markets as community assets.”

Until the end of May, the Portimão market will be offering special discounts on products and hosting workshops, food tastings and a variety of entertainment.

One of the highlights will be a nighttime event – entitled ‘(H)À Noite no Mercado’ – on Saturday, May 25 which will be held between 7.30pm and 12.30am and will feature live music, a fashion display and much more.

Portimão market is located on Avenida São João de Deus and is open Monday to Friday between 7am and 2pm and 5pm and 8pm. On Saturday, it is open between 7am and 2pm. It was inaugurated in 2007 in the same location as the town’s previous market.

The ‘Love Your Local Market’ campaign is organised and supported by the World Union of Whole Sale Markets (WUWM) and is held in over 3,000 markets in 30 countries and three continents.
