Portimão invests €2 million in green space maintenance

Tender launched in 2022 has suffered delays

Portimão Council is investing over €2 million in the maintenance of over 40 hectares of green spaces in the municipality for a three-year period.

The council says it initiated procedures to launch a public tender for the maintenance and conservation of municipal green spaces in August 2022, allocating a budget of €2,058,000 for the project, covering a total area of approximately 41 hectares.

However, the process has been delayed due to the “extensive scale and preparation of the tender,” which encompasses an additional 6.4 hectares compared to the previous process.

The council guarantees that the procedure’s completion is now “imminent”, pending the “required approval from relevant external entities due to the substantial amount involved.”

Nonetheless, the local authority says it is doing everything it can to promptly ensure the “essential maintenance” of these green spaces.

During one of its most financially-challenging periods, one of the ways Portimão Council found to cut down on green space maintenance costs was to ‘rent out’ roundabouts for advertising – meaning companies could use the roundabouts to advertise their business, as long as they kept them looking neat and tidy.
