Portimão is ploughing €925,000 into the renovation of the town’s busy riverside avenue, Avenida Afonso Henriques.
The works, which started on Monday, February 17, involve replacing the entirety of the avenue’s ‘calçada’ (cobblestone) pavement – which is badly rundown, uneven and littered with holes – with asphalt.
The council adds that side pavements and parking areas will also be revamped, as well as the avenue’s water and sanitation pipes.
Given the magnitude of the project, the works will be carried out in three stages.
The first will take place between the Volvo car stand and the Social Security offica as well as Rua Fábrica da Liberdade and is due to be completed sometime in May.
The council explains that this project is considered “fundamental” although it recognises that it will affect the lives of local residents and businesses. Anyone in need of more information is encouraged to contact the council.
