Portimão hosts International Sculpture Symposium

Three international artists to showcase creative process in Alcalar

Portimão is preparing to host the 7th International Sculpture Symposium, due to take place between April 18 and 24 at the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar.

For one whole week between 10am and 1pm and 2pm and 4.30pm, sculptors Thierry Ferreira (France), Oscar Aguirre Comendador (Argentina) and Sylvan Patte (Belgium) will be showcasing their creative process to visitors who will be able to get a first-hand look at how these artists create their artworks.

A fourth sculptor Lyudmyla Mysko (Ukraine) was also due to participate but was unable to because of the ongoing war in her country. Organisers will pay tribute to the artist by placing a stone wrapped in a Ukrainian flag at the site during the event.

Event curator and producer Arlindo Arez hopes the symposium will help people leave behind some of the worst feelings they experienced during the pandemic.

“Lockdowns awakened in many of us experiences of anxiety and temporal uncertainty. Memories got confused, time passed, sometimes quicker sometimes slower, and in the growing whirlwind of days that seemed the same, we were bewildered, deeply uncertain, and lost,” he said.

“During this seventh symposium, artists will propose returning to some certainties: a singular place, long thought to be sacred and safe – in other words, the monuments of the Alcalar necropolis – where they will explore, through monumental stone sculpture, the possibility of continuity, certainty and points of contact throughout time surrounded by their megalithic ancestors,” added Arez, head of cultural association Cuneo-Sularte, which is organising the event.

Meanwhile, a video and two sculptures inspired by the theme ‘Thinking and sculpting for another world’ (Pensado e esculpindo para outro mundo) will be exhibited at the interpretation centre of Alcalar’s megalithic monuments at the same time as the symposium.

The video was created by 37 sculptors from the Ivy Maraey Institute in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, most of them nomad artists who leave their artworks behind in the places where they are created.

Due to the pandemic, these artists were forced to lockdown which left them without being able to work and make money. Their stories will be showcased in the video.

To celebrate International Day for Monuments and Sites (April 18), Portimão will be offering free visits to cultural venues, such as the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar, the Portimão Museum and Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes, between 10am and 3pm. Registrations are open until April 15.
