Portimão is once again hosting a breast cancer awareness walk on Sunday (October 1) as part of the national initiative ‘Outubro Rosa’ (Pink October).
The walk will begin at 10am at the town’s riverside, near the recently-renovated Lota building, and will continue towards Portimão Marina in Praia da Rocha.
Registrations can be made through the Faro Support Group of the Portuguese League Against Cancer (+351 910 449 978 or [email protected]), at the Portimão Sports Pavilion (+351 282 470 813 and [email protected]), or at the following locations: Boavista Sports Pavilion, Alvor Sports Complex, Mexilhoeira Grande Sports Complex, and on the day of the walk.
Each participant is asked to make a minimum donation of five “ribbons” (euros), which is optional. Water and a t-shirt to be used during the walk are provided.
The ‘Pink October’ initiative is organised by the Portuguese League Against Cancer and calls on everyone to participate in raising awareness about the importance of breast cancer prevention and early detection, as well as to support research and training in oncology. It also pays tribute to the courage and resilience of women facing this serious health issue.
In Portugal, approximately 7,000 new cases of breast cancer are detected annually, and there are 1,800 deaths attributed to this cancer, making it the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women.
