Portimão Council sings ‘Happy Birthday’ to local citizens

Spending your birthday alone or closed indoors can be a dispiriting experience, especially at a time when many people have been forced to spend weeks at home due to imposed confinement measures.

Portimão Council has thus launched a new initiative that aims to brighten up the day of local residents who have to spend their birthday indoors.

Actors in funny costumes from local association Boa Esperança Atlético Clube Portimonense will join in the fun when birthday boys and girls are aged under 12.

So far, 200 local citizens of all ages have been surprised on their special day.

For the not so young, the ‘Happy Birthday’ song is played from a council vehicle at their doorstep, with videos shared on social media showing neighbours often joining in the fun.

Anyone interested in this free service can send a private message to Portimão Council’s Facebook page (Município de Portimão) between 9am and 11am the day before the birthday, with the name of the person, their birthday, address and a sentence about them.

The council aims to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to around three people a day and selects the requests “according to its possibilities”.
