Programme features egg hunts, religious celebrations and live music
Portimão is celebrating Easter with a festive programme that includes everything from religious events to egg hunts, magical appearances by the Easter Bunny and an Easter concert.
One of the main points of attraction promises to be the town’s Praça da República (also known as Alameda), where between 3pm and 9pm there will be Parisian carrousels inside a giant Easter egg.
Another must-visit location is Jardim 1º de Dezembro in front of the Tempo theatre, where an Easter market (Mercadinho da Páscoa) is taking place until Saturday, also between 3pm and 9pm. The event sees small businesses and craftspeople selling everything from handicraft to food, sweets and other gourmet products.
On the long Easter weekend (April 15-17), children up to the age of 10 will be able to take part in egg hunts at Jardim Visconde Bívar between 3pm and 7pm and also meet the Easter Bunny in person.
“This chocolate egg hunt will bring surprises for all participants,” says the local council, adding that children can simply sign up on the spot.
For those looking to enjoy a more musical Easter, Tempo theatre will host an Easter Concert on Saturday, April 16, at 7pm, by the Symphonic Orchestra of Algarve, led by maestro Armando Mota and featuring violinist João Pedro Cunha as the soloist. Tickets cost €15 per person and can be purchased online at tempo.bol.pt or at the theatre’s ticket office.
The Holy Week will also be celebrated with religious events at the following churches and places of worship in Portimão: Paróquia de Nª Srª da Conceição – Matriz de Portimão, Paróquia da Igreja Matriz da Mexilhoeira Grande, Paróquia do Divino Salvador de Alvor e Paróquia da Nª Srª do Amparo, and the Vicariato da Pedra Mourinha.
Among the planned events are Easter Vigils, Eucharists, Mass ceremonies and processions.
