Portimão is the best county to live in mainland Portugal, according to a study published in Portuguese newspaper Sol on March 14.
The study, which was carried out by the Instituto de Tecnologia Comportamental (INTEC), a behavioural technology institute, and Sol, considered various categories such as access to health care, including how easy it is to book an appointment with a family doctor. Access to schooling and education was also considered.
Angra do Heroismo in the Azores was the only municipality with better results than Portimão in this annual study, which is now in its second edition. Other councils that were included in the list of top 20 in Portugal were Albufeira, Lisbon, Beja and Figueira da Foz.
Portimão was also in second place for tourism for a variety of reasons, including pro-activity in attracting tourists, and third for its accessibility and transport.
