Around 1200 athletes are expected to compete in Portimão between October 14 and 22.
Over the next two weekends, Praia da Rocha will host the European and World Championship of Beach Ultimate. These two large events will bring together the top athletes of the sport, popularly known as frisbee, on Portimão’s largest beach.
The events were scheduled in the municipality of Portimão following “the success of the European NationsChampionship, held in Praia da Rocha in 2019, within the scope of the European City of Sport”, points out the municipality.
This return results from the municipality’s strategy to promote relevant sporting events to counteract the decline of tourist attractions typical at this time of year.
The first competition to take place is the 2nd European Beach Ultimate Club Championship (EBUCC), scheduled on October 14, 15 and 16, in which around 900 participants will compete, with daily games between 08:00 and 18:00.
Sixty-one teams from 17 European countries, divided into three divisions (mixed, female and male), will participate in the 2nd edition of the EBUCC. The finals are scheduled on Sunday, October 16, with the women’s division playing at 12:30, the mixed division at 13:45, and the men’s division at 15:00.
Between October 19 to 22, three hundred athletes take to the beach to display their skills in the Beach Ultimate Club World Championship in the Great Grand Masters (WFDF) division.
The event will feature 16 teams from Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan, with the final scheduled on October 22 at 16:00.
In order to host the two competitions, Praia da Rocha’s vast sandy beach will be transformed into 12 playing fields, on which close to 350 matches will be played over the coming weekends.
“It will be fantastic to see Beach Ultimate being played at such a high level”, says Sofia Campos Pereira, director of both competitions, who points out that the choice of venue was natural “given the conditions it offers and the support provided by the municipality of Portimão”.
