Port of abandonment

Portimão’s fishing port has been left in “a state of abandonment”, says the CDU political party that visited the site recently.

CDU/Portimão, which is represented by Nelson de Freitas, candidate for the mayor’s position at Portimão Câmara in this year’s local elections, said it was “evident” that the port was virtually abandoned even though “users of the infrastructure had their fees up-to-date”.

CDU spoke to Barlapescas, the association of professional fishermen in the western Algarve, about the situation and concluded that the port and its equipment were seriously “degraded”, requiring urgent repair work.

“It is important to remember that the Algarve contributed 21% of Portugal’s fishing activities in 2012, making it the most important region in the country in terms of fish captured,” said CDU, adding that Portimão port represents 25% of the fish captured in the Algarve.
