Popular saints march out

Colourful parades will be taking place across the Algarve as part of the national popular saints’ celebrations this month.

The Festa dos Santos Populares honours three Catholic saints, John, Peter and Anthony, and is celebrated with large street parades held in many towns and cities across the country between June 12 and 29.

In the Algarve, parades, or marchas, are due to take place in Tavira, Faro, Quarteira, Armação de Pêra, Mexilhoeira Grande, Portimão, Praia da Rocha and Alvor.

The parades traditionally include hundreds of dancers with ostentatious costumes, marching bands and pots of Manjerico.
