Pope to visit Portugal next year

Pope Benedict XVI will visit Portugal in May next year.

The trip was confirmed at a press conference given by the Auxiliary Bishop of Lisbon, R. Carlos Azevedo, and the Pope is expected to visit the cities of Lisbon, Fátima and Porto between May 11 and 14.

He is expected to attend Holy Mass in Lisbon and Porto and religious ceremonies in Fátima.

President of Portugal Aníbal Cavaco Silva will be present throughout the visit and on May 12 a meeting with Prime Minister José Sócrates has been scheduled.

The visit will commemorate the fifth anniversary of the death of Sister Lucia and 10 years since the beatification of Jacinta and Francisco, the brother and sister who, along with Lucia, claimed they saw the Virgin Mary in Fátima in 1917.
