A STAGGERING 29 vehicles were involved in a multiple pile-up last Monday afternoon on the south to north carriageway of the A1 near Vila Franca de Xira, not far from Lisbon. Two motorists were seriously hurt and another two drivers sustained minor injuries.
The more seriously injured victims had to be pulled out of trapped wreckage by accident and emergency crews. The exact cause of the accident is not yet known but a source from the Brigada de Trânsito (traffic police) attributed it to “a slippery motorway after heavy rain”.
The accident, which happened at 1.45pm, caused the temporary closure of the Lisbon to Porto carriageway.
