Political salad

EU legislations that regulated the size and shape of 26 fruit and vegetables sold across Europe have now been discarded.

The changes to the laws came into effect on July 1 but they are still applicable to 10 products, including strawberries, tomatoes and apples.

Each member state can now choose to allow shops to sell those that do not conform to the shape and size agreed as long as they are correctly labelled.

This measure is part of a plan to simplify legislations and reduce bureaucracy within the European Commission.
