A 44-year-old PSP police agent is believed to have committed suicide by shooting himself in the head in his parents’ yard in Peniche.
José Luís was found at 7.15am on Wednesday morning (May 18) by his parents just moments after they heard a gunshot.
According to Correio da Manhã newspaper, the police agent had had breakfast and said goodbye to his parents before leaving the house in uniform for his morning shift.
The reasons behind the apparent suicide are unknown.
Leiria’s PJ police were reported to be investigating as we went to press.
Meantime this week, it was reported that a third of Portugal’s police agents sought psychological support in 2015, with GNR police registering a whopping 300% increase in psychological appointments when compared to 2014 (click here).
