GNR police have issued a statement warning people to be especially careful when withdrawing money from ATM machines in Loulé.
A scam known as ‘cash trapping’ – which involves placing a sticky device in cash dispensers retaining notes so that they can be later retrieved – was detected at a number of machines last weekend.
The scam tricks people into thinking the machine isn’t working and that their money has not been deducted from bank accounts.
To minimise risks, the GNR warns people to:
• Check ATMs for signs of having been tampered with;
• Ensure any machine’s money and card slots are in good condition;
• In the case of anomalies, do not accept help from unknown people and immediately inform the authorities;
• If it is safe to do so, wait beside the machine for the authorities to arrive.
