Police wage war on dog fights

POLICE RECENTLY intercepted a dog fight in a street in Lisbon’s Chelas area, confiscating two Pitbulls and fining their owners, two men aged 27 and 28. The dogs’ owners could be asked to pay anything between 500 and 3,740 euros each. Both dogs were taken to Lisbon’s municipal dog pound.

The Liga Portuguesa dos Direitos dos Animais, the Portuguese league for animal rights, has stated that several dogs have disappeared from their owners in the areas of Lisbon, Cascais and Sintra, later turning up “close to death with serious injuries, mainly to the jaws”, the result of participating in dog fights.
