Police stoned by drunken crowd in Lisbon

PSP police were forced to call for reinforcements after a drunken crowd in central Lisbon started throwing stones at them in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to press reports, the PSP patrol had been called by residents complaining about “excessive noise”.

When they arrived in the Mouraria district near Martim Moniz – a location which only hours before had seen a young man shot in the neck over an alleged “settling of scores” – they are understood to have come face-to-face with a crowd of “around 100 men, drinking alcohol in the street and causing disturbances”.

As soon as the men caught sight of police, they began hurling stones and insults.

The ugly scenes ended with two men being arrested, reports Correio da Manhã. They will have appeared in court earlier this morning.
