A major police swoop on Lisbon’s popular flea market has resulted in five environmental infractions – three of which are considered “very serious” – the total minimum fine of which is €34,750, reports noticiasaominuto.
Among merchandise seized were 35 “pieces of made wholly or partially of ivory” and an exotic bird.
Police explained afterwards that the operation was not simply designed to enforce the CITES convention, relating to the commerce of species in danger of extinction, but also to wake people up to the issue of environmental protection.
