Portuguese police have been criticised by the US State Department for allegedly committing human rights abuses.
A report released by the State Department for Human Rights stated that conditions in Portuguese prisons were poor and violence against women and children by the police in Portugal was also highlighted.
José Manageiro, the president of the Portuguese police association, Associação dos Profissionais da Guarda, said: ”There are no specific police actions identified in the report that are the subject of criticism. The only exceptions to this are the cases that are being handled by the courts already.”
