Police confiscate 18 million smuggled cigarettes

Around 18 million cigarettes being illegally smuggled into Portugal through Sines port were confiscated by PJ police on Tuesday (March 31).

One of the two containers intercepted by the PJ’s corruption squad was filled with over 10 million Gold Classic cigarettes, while the other contained around eight million Bentley and Rich.

In an official statement, police said the cigarettes would have cost the government around €3 million in lost taxes.

It added that an investigation is underway to find the source of the contraband.
