An illegal casino where several people are believed to have gambled was shut down by GNR police on Monday (October 17) on the outskirts of Olhão.
Fourteen people were identified and could now face charges for “illegal gambling and tax fraud”, police said in a statement. Two of them are believed to be the racket’s leaders.
The gamblers will await the outcome of the police investigation in freedom under the ‘Termo de Identidade e Residência’ regime, which does not allow them to leave their area of residence.
The GNR operation also included two house searches and saw police confiscating €4,400 in cash, two cell phones, 20 grams of hashish and a variety of gambling equipment, including chips, cards, a shuffling machine and tables.
