Police capture first ‘international’ criminal

Judicial Police have announced that they have detained a 50-year-old man in Vila Real de Santo António, via a European detention order, on suspicion of involvement in fraud and forgery in Spain. They describe the crimes as being of “international dimensions”.

“This is the first case related to the European detention order,” said a spokesman from the Judicial Police, referring to the new anti-terrorist measure that came into force earlier this year.

Police confirmed that, thanks to the new document, it was possible to begin extradition proceedings immediately, in accordance with the wishes of Spanish authorities.
