A 43-year-old man was arrested by GNR police after allegedly starting two fires in a rural area of Loulé. Police spotted the blazes during a routine patrol in Betunes at around 2am on Saturday (September 24).
The man, who was still near the fires, was caught despite trying to run away.
According to national tabloid Correio da Manhã, he had a lighter which police believe he used to set the fires.
GNR agents acted quickly and put the flames out before they spread with the help of a council worker and the local firefighters who arrived shortly after.
“If the fires hadn’t been quickly put out, the flames could have reached nearby homes,” CM says.
It adds that the alleged arsonist “does not have a job and lives in the area”.
He was released after being heard by Loulé’s DIAP (department of penal investigation), though he must report weekly to authorities.
