Portugal saw an increase in pneumonia over the Christmas and New Year period as a result of a particularly virulent strain of flu.
According to statistics from the National Respiratory Diseases Observatory (ONDR), 100,000 newly diagnosed cases of bacterial and viral pneumonia were recorded, resulting in 38,000 hospital admissions.
Health officials and doctors at hospitals and health centres are recommending that people, particularly the elderly, children and infirm, have the annual flu vaccination.
