Speaking to journalists today in Brussels following the European Council’s decision to create a permanent mechanism to support Ukraine, prime minister António Costa stressed how important it is for the bloc to “ensure Ukraine has the conditions to win a just, long-lasting peace”. But there can be no underestimating of Putin’s level of dangerousness. For all the talk about him being ‘weakened’ by last weekend’s abortive coup, the Russian president still poses a significant threat. “We will see what happens in the future”, said Costa (…) but the level of dangerousness that (Putin) has already revealed is enough to worry us”.
