Talking on the first day of the UN Oceans Conference in Lisbon, prime minister António Costa has been outlining his hopes for the future: more ‘blue economy start-ups’, and more projects for renewable energies. Mr Costa said it is “urgent” that the “crucial link between the climate and the ocean” is fully recognised. Oceans have to be protected, he told the audience, as they are the main climate regulators and ‘carbon sinks’, providing humanity with the resources for decarbonisation and a strategy for energy autonomy. “In this sense, we will invest in the production of oceanic renewable energy with a view to reaching 10 gigawatts of capacity by 2030”, he said.
