PM to visit Algarve tomorrow, to confer new name on Faro airport

None of the government’s current ‘hot agendas’ – particularly the lack of a decision on the person who will be taking over as the country’s new minister for health – are being allowed to get in the way of the prime minister’s agenda.

Tomorrow he will be in the Algarve for the pressing matter of renaming Faro airport.

The infrastructure that has survived perfectly well as plain Faro Airport since 1965, will be rechristened Aeroporto Gago Coutinho, in honour of the pioneering Portuguese airman, a native of São Brás de Alportel, who made the first crossing of the Atlantic 100 years ago, in the company of aviator Sacadura Cabral. The duo used the journey to test Gago Coutinho’s adaptation of a sextant to allow safe navigation when flying out of sight of land. The technique worked, and was adapted for use in airplanes afterwards for many decades.
