Caretaker prime minister António Costa has said today there should be “no hesitation” with regard to the mining of lithium that exists in Portugal. The country should make the most of the fact that it has the largest lithium reserves in Europe, he said. “For the first time, we have a natural resource that is key to the energetic transition”. The PM was speaking at the Toyota Caetano car plant in Ovar where the brand’s prototype electric vehicle designed for the Paris Olympics/ Paralympics was being presented. Mr Costa’s enthusiasm for mining Portugal’s lithium reserves is not shared by many experts, and countless communities that fear their lives and livelihoods are being sacrificed for short-term economic gain.
