PM Costa “sad and shocked” by assassination today of former Japanese PM

Portugal’s prime minister António Costa has tweeted his ‘sadness and shock’ over the assassination of former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe. “We mourn the death of democrat and historic leader of a friendly country with which Portugal has centuries-old relations”, said Mr Costa, sending his sincere condolences to Mr Abe’s family, the Japanese people and Fumio Kishida, the current prime minister. Shinzo Abe was shot in the chest today as he gave a campaign speech for the coming elections. “It is the first killing of a sitting or former Japanese leader since a 1936 coup attempt, when several figures including two ex-premiers were assassinated”, explains Reuters. The presumed shooter has been detained and has apparently told police that he was “dissatisfied with Abe and wanted to kill him”.
