Prime minister António Costa has today awarded Telma Monteiro, Portugal’s gold medal winner in the European Judo Championships, the ‘medal of sporting merit’. In the ceremony which went ahead in Lisbon’s Altice Arena – where the championships are still ongoing – Mr Costa called Ms Monteiro ‘the star that leads Portuguese judo’. The skill she has shown throughout her career has brought the country prestige and “honoured the Portuguese people”, he said.
