‘Play in the Parque’ returns to the forest

This year’s Play in the Parque will take place on Friday, July 5 in the usual idyllic forest setting at Parque de Merendas near Barão de São João. Now in its 13th year, this outdoor community theatre performance has become an extremely popular event in the Algarvian calendar.

Written and produced by Aljezur International School, this year’s play is called “The Rocky Horror History Show” and will take the audience on a magical journey through time, meeting some familiar characters from the past and learning some unusual facts about them.

Hosted by year 10 students Noah O’Neill and Liza Mampel, playing the parts of Riff Raff and Magenta, the action is sprinkled with cabaret acts, singing, dancing and some surprise guests.

As always, there is a moral running through the storyline and this year’s message takes the form of an anagram which the audience will be asked to solve at the end, thereby discovering the key to happiness.

The cast of nearly 70 includes not only teachers and students of Aljezur International School but also adults and children from the local community. Along with the countless volunteers who always come forward to offer their time and energy backstage, this diverse group of people come together once a year to create a fantastic fun-filled evening of family entertainment.

The audience is invited to come to Parque de Merendas at 4.30pm for the barbecue and the show will start at 6.30pm. Audience members are advised to bring a blanket or chair to sit on.

All proceeds from the evening will go to Alwan Kindergarten in Syria and the local bombeiros.
