Play in the Parque returns to forest

Now in its 12th year, the Play in the Parque has become a popular event in the Algarvian calendar. What makes this production so unique is that it takes place in the idyllic outdoor setting of the Parque de Merendas in the forest behind Barão de São João.

It involves not only students, teachers and parents of Aljezur International School but also many children and adults from the local community. “Every year, more and more people come forward to help with props and costumes which means this year’s production is expected to be the most spectacular yet,” said school director Karen Whitten.

“Pirates of the Can of Beans – The Curse of the Black Plastic Bag” will take the audience on a hilarious journey to a desert island where they will meet many familiar characters such as Captain Pugwash, Jack Sparrow and Long John Silver as well as some unexpected visitors such as the Corporation family (Cola, Pepsi and Starbuck) and a well-known monster from Scotland who appears to be lost. All this sprinkled with some surprise cabaret acts and audience singalongs will make for a perfect evening of family fun.

As well as the fun and laughter which is always enjoyed by the audience and cast alike, there is also a serious message behind the frivolity. “This year the issue is the horrendous amount of plastic which makes its way into our oceans. King Neptune will be giving the audience some tips on how we can all help to turn the tide on this potential ecological disaster,” said Karen.

The audience is invited to go along to the forest on Friday, July 6 at 5pm when the barbecue and bar will be serving food and drink. The show itself starts at 6.30pm and audience members are advised to bring a blanket or deck chair to sit on.
