Play golf and help cancer patients in the Algarve

FOLLOWING ON from the successful Mamamaratona 6 event in October, the Associação Oncológica do Algarve (AOA), the Algarve Oncology Association, is continuing its campaign to raise funds to build an accommodation centre for cancer patients undergoing treatment at the new Radiotherapy Unit in Faro.

The Quinta do Lago resort has offered its Sul course for the first in a series of charity golf tournaments on December 17, forming part of the Silver Line Competition.

The AOA expects further golf clubs to support the project over the coming months, with the aim being for a grand final to be held at Quinta da Ria in June 2007. There are also plans to organise a Pro-Celebrity Am-Am event.

As cancer patients travel from all over the region to have radiotherapy treatment in Faro, lodging becomes a major concern. Therefore the AOA plans to build a house near the Radiotherapy Unit where patients can stay during their treatment period. Land has been donated by Faro Câmara and so far the AOA has raised 20,000 euros towards the cost, but a lot more is needed before the project can get underway.

Once built, the house will be known as Casa Flor das Dunas (Dune Flower House), a name chosen by the AOA.

The house is named after the wild flower Armeria Maritima, a small, pink, fragile flower that is also strong and resistant, a suitable symbol for this special accommodation unit.

Playing in the first of these charity golf events could provide some welcome respite from the stresses of Christmas shopping (that’s depending on how you play of course!) Entrance costs 40 euros and registration is open until December 14. The first golfers will tee-off at 7.36am.
