Pirates in the Algarve

The Algarve has for centuries been a target for pirates and corsairs, from Roman times through to the Barbary corsairs of the early modern period.

In the latest of his lectures on Algarvean and Portuguese history, Peter Booker will be discussing the role of pirates of all nationalities, including the English, and Sir Francis Drake in the history of the Algarve.

The talks will be taking place on March 16 at the São José convent in Lagoa from 6.30pm and on March 26 at the Tavira municipal library from 11am.

Meanwhile, on March 22, Peter Booker will give a talk about the disastrous reign of Dom Sebastião at the Almancil community centre, from 7pm.

Entrance is free for the Tavira talk but there is a two euro fee at the São José convent in Lagos and a three euro fee at the Almancil community centre.
