PORTUGUESE STATE owned television RTP has started to use subtitles on its daily news programmes.
The company says this is a pioneering project that aims to provide a better public service to viewers, especially those in the deaf community.
The new system was developed by INESC-ID, an engineering and computing institute based in Lisbon, and is part of a project named Tecnovoz.
The new technology provides the subtitles automatically after recognising the words spoken by the TV journalists.
