Pilgrimage preparations

A group of walkers in the east of the Algarve is preparing for a pilgrimage later this year from the Algarve to Santiago de Compostela in Spain to mark the Holy year of Santiago de Compostela in 2010.

The Holy year of Santiago de Compostela is held whenever St James’s day (July 25) lands on a Sunday making the next Holy year 2021.

Training walks are currently occurring several times a week and anyone interested in long distance walking in the eastern Algarve are welcome to join the group, either to also prepare for the pilgrimage or to simply enjoy the company of other walkers.

Johannes Eussen, a volunteer with the group, said: “The walks are not just for people with a religious background and you do not have to be an experienced walker to take part. However, if you are new to distance walking we recommend that you start with one of the shorter walks.”

The next walk will take place today (Friday) with participants meeting at the ferry in Vila Real de Santo António at 9am for a 20km walk.

All walks cost five euros to participate in and include a drink.

For further information about the walks, or to be placed on the group’s mailing list, please contact Johannes Eussen by calling 919 528 654 or alternatively email [email protected]
